  • The official Cabo San Lucas hurricane season is June through November, but most of the summer and fall is just normal warm and sunny (perfect!) Cabo San Lucas weather. The majority of wind and rainfall comes in September, and it’s around this time that the city could experience a Cabo San Lucas travel advisory for a storm. If there is a hurricane near Cabo San Lucas, city officials will make announcements and take precautions. Most years, a storm headed to Cabo San Lucas ends up being classified as a tropical storm and not a hurricane, and the city ends up just getting a few rainy days. This article gives some good information and advice on traveling to Cabo during the late summer. We also have a blog post about Cabo’s year-round weather that you can check out here.

  • Cabo San Lucas is considered a safe destination for American travelers. The Mexican government has made significant efforts to maintain security in the area, including increasing the number of police officers and implementing security measures at popular tourist sites. Most people visiting Cabo describe feeling safer than they do in most U.S. cities.

Like any destination, it’s good to be aware and informed before you travel. Petty crime, such as pickpocketing can occur in crowded tourist areas, so it's important to take precautions like keeping your valuables secure and being aware of your surroundings. Never buy or sell drugs while in Mexico.

Serious safety/crime concerns that you may hear about in some areas of Mexico occur in parts of the country that are very far from Cabo San Lucas. Mexico is a big country! Nonetheless, it's always a good idea to check current travel advisories and consult with local authorities to stay informed about any potential safety risks that may come up.

We have a thorough blog post about this subject that we encourage you to check out here.

  • U.S. citizens flying into Mexico must have valid passport books, regardless of age. It can take up to 14 weeks for your application to be processed and for you to receive your new or renewed passport. Please make sure that you give sufficient time to receive your current passport before you book your travel! You can find out more information about getting a U.S. passport here.

In addition, the passport books should meet the following requirements:

    • They should be valid at the time of entry. If you plan on flying back to the U.S., the passport book should also be valid at the time of departure. Ideally, you should use a passport with at least six months of validity to accommodate unforeseen delays. If your passport has expired or is close to expiring, renewing it is advisable.

    • Passports should be in good condition. Immigration officials do not accept passports with damage past normal wear and tear. So, if someone has drawn on your passport, dunked it in water, or torn it, you need to get a replacement. Please also note that you should report and replace lost or stolen passports.

    • They should have at least one blank page for the entry stamp. If you plan to visit other regions after Mexico, you should have more than one blank page to avoid getting turned away.

You can also drive to Cabo San Lucas. In this case, having a passport is not mandatory. Instead, you can use WHTI-compliant documents like passport cards, birth certificates, and trusted traveler’s cards. Even minors need have compliant documents. Some US travelers can opt to apply for a cheaper passport card, issued under the NEXUS or SENTRI Trusted Traveler Programs, or show a driver's license with an RFID chip. Only a handful of states have issued RFID licenses.

Please note that having WHTI-compliant documents does not enable you to fly back to the U.S. in an emergency. Thus, it’s best to have a passport book in hand in the event of an emergency evacuation.
